Welcome to the Indie Birth Revolution

Welcome to 2022, a dystopian nightmare where we are nearly two years into whatever the fuck is going on – Covid-19? Or coronavirus? Lizards taking over the earth? Communism spreading? We don’t really know what’s going on any more than you do, but we do know a thing or two about how all of these really big themes intersect with the work we have been doing here at Indie Birth for over a decade in the birth arena – we’re talking about autonomy, freedom, and sovereignty, all of which are being threatened even more in the last few years as the shitshow has unfolded.

We are some of the only midwives and birth educators speaking out and refusing to comply with masking, vaccinations, and mandates IN THE WORLD. Even some of the birth influencers that we have loved in the past have seemingly fallen under the hypnosis of morality politics and the rampant FEAR pandemic that has swept the world. We have felt enraged, confused and alone at times. 

Other times, we are grateful for this all making it so much easier to find our people, which is why we are so excited to put out this bold, uncensored collection of our radical perspectives, our stories that have unfolded since 2020, and to highlight voices from our Indie Birth community sharing the way the p(l)andemic has impacted them. If this resonates with you, we hope you will share it, and dive deeper into our larger body of work around re-igniting the fire of autonomy for every birthing woman and baby entering this crazy world.

Believe it or not, we are also some of the only midwives speaking about autonomy, freedom and sovereignty in terms of birth and midwifery in general. We are some of the only autonomous midwives training more autonomous midwives in the world through our Indie Birth Midwifery School. We are one of the only birth resources that has created resources for pregnant women specifically from a perspective rooted in these values. Free from dogma, prescription, paternalism and with women always as the ultimate authority on their own lives and experiences. 

So if you love freedom and want to see this world become a more sane, beautiful, brave place, please share our work with every person in your life. Because until women are revered as powerful beings, and birth is held as sacred again, the rest is sort of a moot point. 

An amazing elder midwife Jeannine Parvati-Baker coined the phrase “Peace on earth begins with birth.” But today we would argue that…

“FREEDOM on Earth begins with birth.”
